KeyScrambler FAQs

Windows Troubleshooting FAQ
Q: The KeyScrambler tray icon is yellow and it says "KeyScrambler is Inactive," why?
A: It indicates that you're currently not in a protected application. (See protected applications)
Q: KeyScrambler is showing a red popup saying "Encryption module error," what should I do?
A: If you haven't restarted your computer after installing or updating KeyScrambler, please do so. If you have Kaspersky 2009, ThreatFire or AVAST installed, please pause it, run the KeyScrambler installer again and reboot your computer. You can then resume your security program after the installation.
Q: KeyScrambler Personal didn't get installed or didn't get updated in Firefox, what should I do?
A: Start Firefox and click "File -> Open File" and open the file "C:\Program Files\KeyScrambler\getting_started.html". Click on the installation link within and you'll be prompted to install "keyscrambler.xpi". Restart Firefox and you should have KeyScrambler installed.

Note: these steps are not necessary for KeyScrambler Pro and Premium. Firefox will be protected automatically without needing the add-on to be installed.
Q: KeyScrambler Personal does not start when Internet Explorer is started, what should I do?
A: You may have to enable browser extensions in IE for KeyScrambler to work. To do so, click on "Tools -> Internet Options" in IE, then select the "Advanced" tab. About half way down the list of options, there's an item called "Enable third-party browser extensions". If this option isn't checked, check it and restart IE. KeyScrambler should then start with the browser. If it still doesn't start, click on "Tools -> Manage add-ons -> Enable or disable add-ons," and make sure that the items "KeyScrambler..." and "CKeyScramblerBHO Object" are both enabled.
Q: How do I make KeyScrambler Personal run in Internet Explorer 8's InPrivate mode?
A: Click on "Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy" in IE8 and then uncheck "Disable toolbars and extensions when InPrivate browsing starts". (You do not need to do this if you're running KeyScrambler Pro or Premium because Pro and Premium do not run as IE extensions and automatically work in InPrivate mode).
Q: I can't find KeyScrambler Personal's tray icon when I'm running Internet Explorer under Windows Vista or Windows 7.
A: Internet Explorer runs in "Protected Mode" by default in Vista and Windows 7, which means that IE is restricted in a number of ways, including access to the system tray. As a result, IE add-ons like KeyScrambler Personal that run as part of IE process are restricted also. This is why KeyScrambler Personal can't display the tray icon when it's running in IE under Vista or Windows 7. (This restriction does not apply to KeyScrambler Pro and Premium.)
Q: When I start Firefox, it tells me that the KeyScrambler extension needs to be updated, but I can't find the keyscrambler.xpi file mentioned. What should I do?
A: This message is caused by a left-over KeyScrambler Personal extension when you've already upgraded to KeyScrambler Pro or Premium. Most likely the installer couldn't remove the extension automatically, so you have to do so manually. Click on the menu button in Firefox (or the Tools menu in Firefox 3.5 or earlier) and select "Add-ons". Then select KeyScrambler in the list of add-ons and click on "Remove" (or "Uninstall" in earlier versions). Restart Firefox and you should no longer see the message.
KeyScrambler For Windows FAQ
Q: Why do I need KeyScrambler?
A: For an additional layer of defense. With cybercriminals swarming the Internet and 75% of the malware having keystroke logging capability, KeyScrambler is a must have to ensure that your keystrokes are protected against both known and unknown keyloggers. (Read about security trends)
Q: How do I know KeyScrambler is working as claimed?
A: KeyScrambler has been tested by many security experts, major download sites, bloggers and users over the years and has a user base of over 1 million from all over the world. (Read the endorsements)
If you'd like to do a test yourself, you could download any number of commercial keyloggers from sites such as CNet's Download.com (most of these have a free trial period). You could also download Anti-Keylogger Tester, which is free at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/antikeyloggertester.html.
Q: I have anti-spyware and anti-virus software installed. Do I still need KeyScrambler?
A: Yes, and this is why: There are tens of thousands of keyloggers and new ones are appearing all the time. Most anti-spyware and anti-virus programs may not be able to detect new viruses and worms because they have to be updated to recognize them, which means that they often work after the fact and may not be able to stop theft in time. KeyScrambler protects all the time. It defeats existing and new keyloggers by making your keystrokes indecipherable to spyware. (Learn more about KeyScrambler)
Q: Do I have to turn KeyScrambler on and off each time?
A: No, KeyScrambler is automatically enabled whenever you log on to a protected application. If you want to turn it off temporarily, you can double click the KeyScrambler tray icon. You can also use the hotkey combination (Ctr+Shift+k) to toggle it. (See other ways of turning KeyScrambler on and off)
Q: Can I hide the overlay window?
A: Yes. Click here to go to KeyScrambler How-Tos. You'll see how simple it is to tweak KeyScrambler until you're perfectly happy.
Q: What are the differences between KeyScrambler Personal, KeyScrambler Professional, and KeyScrambler Premium?
A: The major difference is in the number of protected applications. KeyScrambler Personal supports only Internet Explorer, and Firefox. KeyScrambler Pro and Premium protect many other applications including email, chat, games, office, password managers, and many more. Click here for a detailed list of all the supported applications.
Q: I thought KeyScrambler was digitally signed, but when installing on Firefox it says "unsigned." Why?
A: Firefox currently does not include the chain of certificates necessary to verify QFX Software's digital signature, so we could not sign the Firefox extension package "keyscrambler.xpi". However, the KeyScrambler components within are still digitally signed. You can verify this: After your installation, right-click on "keyscrambler.sys" or "keyscramblerie.dll" and look in the "Digital Signatures" tab. The company's signature should be shown.
Q: Do I have to pay for KeyScrambler Pro or Premium every year, like with other security software?
A: No, you can use the version of KeyScrambler you purchase for as long as you like without having to pay again. You will receive free upgrades for at least one year.
Q: If I'm using a password manager, such as LastPass, KeePass, or Norton Identity Safe, do I still need KeyScrambler?
A: Yes. Because your master password needs to be protected. Also, when you have to enter new information, you need KeyScrambler.
Q: What kind of encryption does KeyScrambler use?
A: KeyScrambler uses both standard symmetric-key and asymmetric-key encryption. The algorithm used for symmetric-key encryption is Blowfish (128-bit). The algorithm for asymmetric-key is RSA (1024-bit).
Q: I'm using a 64-bit edition of Windows, and I notice there are two instances of KeyScrambler.exe in the Task Manager. Is this normal?
A: Yes, on a 64-bit system KeyScrambler runs as both a 32-bit and a 64-bit process to ensure that all the supported programs are protected. Because there's a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit programs running, KeyScrambler runs in both modes simultaneously to protect both types of programs.
